Let me tell you about this weirdly wonderful book I just finished. It's called '比目魚' by Aiyuezhuren, and it's not about fish. Okay, it's kind of about fish, but mostly it's about this guy who gets a second chance at life in the most bizarre way possible. Imagine you die, and instead of heaven or hell, your soul ends up... in a flounder? That's the wild setup. The story follows this spirit, now stuck in a flatfish, as he navigates the human world he can no longer touch, observing old friends and enemies from the ocean floor. It's funny, surprisingly sad, and asks all the big questions about regret, purpose, and what we leave behind. If you're looking for something totally different that will make you laugh and then quietly stare at the wall thinking about your life, this is your next read.

I picked up '比目魚' (The Flounder) on a whim, drawn in by its strange premise. It delivered on the weirdness and so much more.

The Story

The book opens with the death of its main character, a man full of regrets about his selfish life. Instead of moving on, he finds his consciousness trapped in the body of a flounder. From this new, limited perspective—stuck on the seabed, observing the shore—he watches the lives of the people he knew continue without him. He sees a former rival succeed, a loved one grieve and then slowly heal, and the consequences of his own actions ripple out in ways he never anticipated. The plot is his journey from a place of frustrated observation to a deeper understanding of his own life and the connections he took for granted.

Why You Should Read It

What makes this book special is its voice. The narrator, our flounder-bound spirit, is sarcastic, witty, and painfully self-aware. His observations are hilarious at first ('Try catching a brine shrimp with no hands. I dare you.'), but the humor slowly gives way to a genuine and moving pathos. Through his fish-eyed view, the book explores forgiveness—both giving it and, harder still, earning it for yourself. It strips life down to its essentials, asking what really matters when all your worldly power and presence is gone. I found myself completely invested in a character who, for most of the book, is literally a bottom-feeder.

Final Verdict

'比目魚' is a hidden gem. It's perfect for anyone who loves imaginative, character-driven fiction that doesn't fit neatly into a box. If you enjoyed the reflective strangeness of books like 'The Midnight Library' or 'A Man Called Ove,' but wish they were a bit more philosophical and a lot more aquatic, you'll adore this. It's a quick, engaging read that packs an emotional punch and will leave you looking at both the ocean and your own life a little differently.

This is one of those stories where the plot twists are genuinely surprising. I will read more from this author.
